E3 ’14 – Hands-On With Chasm
June 13th - via: cliqist.com
Discord Games did quite well with their Chasm Kickstarter last year. Since then, fans have been hungrily eyeing the 2D action platformer. Earlier in the year many players got a shot at a demo during PAX but I was not one of those people. As such, I’ve simply watched from afar as others played the new demo and wondered how it would be to actually play. Well, my chance finally came during E3 as Chasm was being demoed on PS4s. These are the thoughts I had while playing. (Read More)

Geek Haven: Kickass Games on Kickstarter
May 9th - via: nerdspan.com
the surface of it, Kickstarter (and any of its sister crowdfunding platforms) isn’t half so righteous or so revolutionary. However, the similarities are there, like submarine treasure, for those who seek them out. If you’ve spent any time among crowdfunders (or you are one yourself), and you have a working nose, it’ll detect more than a whiff of grassroots anti-establishmentarianism. (Read More)

Indie RPG Chasm leaps over Kickstarter goal
May 6th - via: pcgamer.com
I couldn’t be more delighted with the news that the promising Chasm has met its Kickstarter target – and not just because it gave me an excuse to use that exciting headline. OK, so it’s mostly that, but I also like the cut of the action RPG’s jib. The Symphony of the Night/Zelda/Diablo-inspired sidescroller has brought in all $150,000 required to make the game happen. It’s still a few…hundred thousand dollars shy of achieving all its stretch goals, but there are five days to go before Mr Kickstarter bangs his power-gavel and declares Chasm’s funding campaign “OOOOOVEERRRRR”. Also: Mr Kickstarter is a robot. (Read More)

Kickstarter Katchup
April 28th - via: rockpapershotgun.com
Jagged Alliance: Flashback arrives in the Katchup this week. I’ve expected (and hoped for) a Jagged Alliance crowdfunding attempt for some time now. As soon as it became obvious that Kickstarter was a place where old franchises could revive themselves, every week that the mercenaries didn’t appear was slightly more unsettling than the last. Would I rather have a direct sequel without a crowdfunding campaign? Perhaps. (Read More)

Kickstarter Katchup – April 21st 2013
April 21st - via: rockpapershotgun.com
Two $100,000 winners this week and a few other projects close to the finish line. While I was compiling the column this week, I realised I was keeping track of the number of projects that apparently ‘contained roguelike elements’. It’s about 90%, although to be fair I stopped keeping track almost as soon as I’d started so that figure is entirely made up. Perhaps my memory fails me, but I don’t recall the term being anything like as popular 12 months ago. Of course, some would argue that the meaning has been lost and that anything with procedural generation or a modicum of difficulty is now wearing the roguelike hat, but that in itself surely tells us something. Games want to be like rogue, which is far more agreeable than the days when every other one wanted to be like a soldier or a space marine. (Read More)
