How many of you grew up on a steady diet of comics, and came upon instances where there was this huge are that is engulfed in flames, only to have a superhero like Superman fly by and blowing his lungs out, or to have the Incredible Hulk do the same (although chances are he might just clap his hands). I am quite sure that Clark Kent would brush his teeth daily, but gamma-radiated Hulk? He might not be so pleasant to smell breath-wise. If you go camping down in the wild woods, the chances of happening upon a conveniently-placed power outlet for blowing up your mattress with an electric air pump are pretty remote. Unless you have a hand or foot pump in your backpack, you'll have to wrap your lips around a tiny valve that likely has a history of being dragged through all sorts of unmentionable nastiness, and then spend the next long while taking deep breaths and blowing. As we saw with NEMO Equipment's gear, clever design can enable air to play a significant structural role with camping gear. In NEMO's case, that air is provided by a pump. Portland-based inventor Ryan Frayne is also experimenting with air, but he's zeroed in on a particular element of the user experience: How to get the air into the product. To that end, Frayne has focused on designing a special valve, and the results are pretty impressive. Frayne's Windcatcher design amplifies your exhalation, using physics I don't understand to multiply your air volume by a factor of 10 or 15—with the added benefit that you don't even have to put your mouth on the thing. (Read More)

Inflatable stuff, from giant couches to blow-up waterparks, are awesome. And if they can have the same superpowers as the Windcatcher Air Pad, they will likely be even more awesome. Created by Portland-based Ryan Frayne, it's an inflatable mattress that's designed for blowing up by simply puffing into it. Yep, no pumps necessary.
