Console Wars: The Card Game Is Coming

Did you enjoy Blake Harris’ book Console Wars, and the documentary miniseries that came from it? What we’re about to discuss has nothing to do with either — “Console Wars” is not a trademarked phrase. But it is very much in the spirit of those true accounts. If you ever wanted to step into that heated battle yourself, you should check out an upcoming card game from XboxEra.

In Console Wars: The Card Game, you and your friends play gluttinous AAA video game companies deep in the battle for market domination! First you must grab as many IPs as possible, for you won’t be able to attract fans (or fan cards, in this case) without them. Steal fans from your rivals by releasing new games, or play dirty by throwing down “Action Cards” that take over other studios or introduce PR scandals for your rivals. The first corporation to build four complete sets of Genre Cards is the winner.

“;Console Wars’ is something the entire industry knows about, and actively dislikes,” says Jon Clarke, Co-founder of XboxEra. “So what if we took all that toxicity; all that online hate – and turned it into something positive and fun? Something where we could all collectively point and laugh at how ridiculous the very concept of ‘console warring’ is? That’s how Console Wars: The Card Game came to be. Inspired by many of the card games I already play, I wanted to make something even more strategic, vicious and hilarious. As I’ve witnessed with the playtesting over the last year, I truly believe that’s what Console Wars The Card Game is!”

The crowdfunding campaign for  Console Wars is live now. Get a Standard Edition with 48 IP Cards, 33 Action Cards, 25 Fanbase Cards, and a lot more for a $26 pledge. Add in a “DLC Pack” of 55 more cards for a $45 pledge. Or get the exclusive-to-Kickstarter “Console Warrior Edition” for $52.

Console Wars: The Card Game will make a live appearance at Gamescom later this month, in Hall 05.2 at Stand SB037. Gamescom takes place from August 21 through 25 in Koelnmesse, Cologne. As for the Kickstarter, it ends September 4.

This card game sounds like a hilarious way to relive those crazy battles between PlayStation and Xbox. Imagine stealing fans with a killer game release, or throwing shade at your opponent with a juicy PR scandal card. Strategic, vicious, and hilarious? Sign me up! Plus, the price for the Standard Edition seems pretty fair. Gotta check out the Kickstarter before it ends.

LOL, PC Masterrace, a card game about console wars? That sounds… interesting! I'm not super competitive, but I do enjoy a good laugh, and this "pointing and laughing at ourselves" angle seems fun. Plus, anything that brings back memories of those old console battles is a win for me. Maybe this could be a good way to introduce my kids to a bit of gaming history in a lighthearted way.

A Console Wars card game with a Kickstarter campaign? This collector's senses are tingling! Limited edition "Console Warrior Edition"? Exclusive cards? This is a must-have for any gaming enthusiast. I don't even care if the gameplay is amazing, those unique cards scream "collector's item." Plus, a trip to Gamescom to see it live sounds like a dream come true. My wallet might cry, but my inner collector will rejoice!

Twenty-six bucks for a card game? Hmm, that's a bit steep for my allowance. Maybe I can convince my parents to chip in for my birthday? The idea of building fanbases and launching PR attacks sounds cool, but I don't know if I can justify the cost. Maybe I can find some gameplay videos online first to see if it's worth the price tag.
