Bargain-Bin Cinematic Universe Kickstarter Campaign A Smashing Success
Austin McConnell’s bargain bin heroes are here!
With superhero movies from Marvel and DC dominating the silver screen, it’s hard not to feel the urge for something brand new. One intrepid YouTuber and filmmaker decided to take matters into their own hands by making their own cinematic universe.
Dubbed the Bargain-Bin Cinematic Universe, Austin McConnell has scoured the public domain for defunct superheroes and crafted a solid plan on reintroducing obscure Golden Age comic books to a new audience.
Unlike the monumental successes of Superman and Batman from this generation, McConnell seeks to highlight oddball and ludicrous heroes from the ‘30s to the ‘60s. Thesethese characters will not only be modernised, but also come together as a team for the very first time.
That is if McConnell’s plans come to fruition, but judging by the recent Kickstarter campaign that he created, things are looking up for the Bargain-Bin Cinematic Universe. Launched on April 1, 2022, the Kickstarter campaign has since received double of the funds it set out to receive..
Atlas: The Animated Movie will be the first project of the Bargain-Bin Cinematic Universe and had a campaign goal of US$15,000. With the goal reached, McConnell will be making a CGI animated film based on Atlas called The Man of Might.
The forgotten hero will very much act as the Superman or Iron Man of this cinematic universe, being an introduction to the world and characters at play. Atlas stars a timid man named Jim Randall, who is bestowed with great powers by the Greek god Atlas.
This one-shot comic book that was made to promote exercise to children but will now be the tentpole for even more unknown superheroes to join in the fray. Among them include Spider Queen, Little Red Riding Hood, and Six-Gun Gorilla.
With a general feeling of “so crazy, it might work”, McConnell has spent the past two years researching and crafting the Bargain-Bin Cinematic Universe, with his skills in filmmaking and 3D animation definitely helping in the shaping of this idea.
The immense success of the Kickstarter has seen the introduction of new stretch goals, which include a theatrical release and the development of the next installment. So far, backers have successfully funded the film to include an original soundtrack and a post-credits scene.
There’s still just over two weeks before this campaign ends, and if you want to back the first film of the Bargain-Bin Cinematic Universe, check out the Kickstarter page right here.
