Matthew A. Cherry is a former NFL player, turned TV production assistant, turned TV episode director, turned Oscar-winning executive producer and he's not even 40.

Following the success of BlackKlansman, Cherry's Hair Love short film, which started out as a 2017 KickStarter campaign that raised nearly $300K, has been optioned by Sony Pictures Animation.

In the past year, it has been very clear that audiences have been yearning to see fresh stories that are universal and culturally authentic, said Sony Pictures Animation President Kristine Belson (who is clearly referring to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse). She continued, "Hair Love is a wonderful father-daughter story and we are proud to nurture talented young filmmakers like Matthew who are breaking new ground."

Sony has yet to reveal when the short will be released so stay tuned to Toonado for future updates.
