Asylum is Back From The Dead

IGN speaks to Asylum lead designer, Agustín Cordes, about bringing the game out of the wilderness.

You might remember two years ago watching a short, disturbing trailer about a game set in an insane asylum - and then you might remember never hearing anything about it ever again. That’s because after teasing fans on YouTube with a snippet of what to expect, Agustín Cordes, the lead designer of the forthcoming Asylum, and the rest of his development team scurried back to their Argentina based office to finish developing it. Unfortunately, development has been slower than expected and the initial hype around the teaser trailer has understandably evaporated. But two significant things have happened in the last year that have changed Asylum’s fortunes. Firstly, crowdfunding via Kickstarter has pushed development forward, with completion expected in 2013. Secondly, The Success of The Walking Dead game has generated a thirst for 18+ horror point and click adventures.

“Asylum is a ‘traditional’ adventure that offers a cerebral type of gameplay. We take horror very seriously and Asylum will provide a truly terrifying experience that will mess with your mind, not with cheap scares or disgusting monsters chasing you, but a genuinely frightening mood and story where you can never tell what to expect.” Agustín says confidently. And there’s no reason for him not to be confident; he knows his brand, having previously worked on Scratches – a PC only horror mystery that was released to decent critical response.

Asylum however is a bigger project than Scratches and bigger projects require XL sized funds. Agustín had to turn to turn to the fans, via Kickstarter, to get development up and running again, something he wasn’t so keen on initially. “At first I was reluctant to try crowdfunding but I’ve found it to be an excellent means to secure funds. Still, I'd much prefer being able to self-fund our own projects, although this always depends on how successful you are.”

The Kickstarter campaign has already generated $70,000, with the goal being $100,000 by Thursday 28th February. Some of those backers may be fans of his previous work, some may be well-wishers but most are probably gamers who’ve developed a taste for a different type of game, a point and click adventure for adults. The success of The Walking Dead game couldn’t have come at a better time for Agustín and he’s hoping that Asylum will be able to ride some of The Walking Dead’s residual critic love. However, he’s realistic about Asylum’s chances of emulating anything like the Walking Dead’s success. “I don't think it's going to reach the success of The Walking Dead, which I very much liked. We do believe, however, that it will be a very strong entry in the adventure genre, especially when it comes to horror adventures.”

1501 people have backed the game on Kickstarter so far, and, although a release date isn’t set in stone, Agustín is hoping to reward his backers with a completed version of the game later this year.
