A lot of gamers are apparently interested in the prospect of exploring a virtual 1:1 scale of the Milky Way galaxy on their custom-built spaceships in Starship Simulator. Over 5,000 backers have chipped in to fund the game’s Kickstarter campaign way over its £65,000 funding goal.

The month-long crowdfunding campaign ended on Friday with a grand total of £402,805, or roughly $498,000 worth of pledges. Backers were able to unlock four of the seven stretch goals which include native room-scale VR support, inter-galactic shuttles, procedural-generated alien structures, planetary landings, tactical combat training scenarios, and a standalone ship vs. ship game mode.

Indie developer FleetYard Studios promises a “minimum viable product” on early access launch including a full procedural-generated galaxy to explore, planetary probes, alien races, the Magellan Class starship, fully working crew roles, and full NPC crews.

Managing director Dan Govier offers an overview of Starship Simulator’s key features below. There’s also a free demo on Steam if you want actual hands-on time.
