A new tabletop role-playing game set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra is coming from Nickelodeon and tabletop game maker Magpie Games. A crowdfunding campaign for that game, titled Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game, launched on Kickstarter Tuesday, and, yeah, it’s gonna make its goal.
Magpie Games sought $50,000 to create Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game — and met that goal in just 16 minutes. As of Thursday, the officially licensed Avatar tabletop RPG has racked up more than $2.4 million in pledges from more than 20,000 backers. As with many tabletop role-playing games that come to Kickstarter, that fundraising is more about pre-orders than it is securing initial investment to make the game; Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game is expected to ship in February 2022, so backers won’t have to wait long to get it.
Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game will let Avatar and Korra fans tell their own stories in the beloved fantasy world. Magpie promises “an innovative system that brings the world of the Four Nations to life in a tabletop roleplaying game that captures the heart of the Avatar franchise: balance, heroism, and the power of friendship.” Players will create their own characters in the Four Nations — a bender, martial artist, or technological savant — in one of five playable eras: Kyoshi’s, Roku’s The Hundred Year War, Aang’s, or Korra’s.
Avatar Legends: The RPG is built on the Powered by the Apocalypse framework, used in many TTRPGs such as Evil Hat Productions’ Monster of the Week and Magpie’s previous games, Masks: A New Generation, and Root: The RPG (which was also funded in part through Kickstarter). Players can test out Avatar Legends’ implementation of that system with a quickstart version of the game, in PDF form, from Magpie’s website. For players who want to go all-in, they can get an all-digital version of Avatar Legends by pledging $20 through the Kickstarter campaign. To get a hardcover core book, they’ll need to spend $50. At the $75 level, backers will get the core book, all digital rewards, a dice pack, a combat action deck, four adventure booklets, and more.
Avatar Legends continues the Avatar franchise ascendance back into the pop culture mainstream. In February, following the viral appearance of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra on Netflix, Viacom announced the creation of Avatar Studios, a new operation overseen by original series creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko designed to produce fresh stories set in the universe for both film and television. With the studio’s first animated theatrical feature is currently in production, Nickelodeon has also expanded the franchise beyond books and comics with several YouTube series and a retrospective podcast hosted by series voice actors Janet Varney and Dante Basco. Like a boy thawed from ice after 100 years, a property that’s been mostly dormant since 2014 is making a grand return.
