The release of UVMask couldn't be more timely. Designed in the United States and made in Japan, this next-generation reusable mask that's been two years in the making has built-in UV-C sterilization that neutralizes 99.99% of bacteria, viruses, pollution, and particles. UVMask is already making waves on Kickstarter, where it has raised over $500,000 with more than a month to go in the campaign.
The team behind the UVMask was inspired to start the project after learning about new World Health Organization data showing that nine out of 10 people breathe air that's high in pollutants. This set them on a course to design an affordable, reusable mask that would be effective in controlling the air that we breathe. And now, with the coronavirus making masks even more in demand, they've picked the right time to release this technology to the public.
“Two years ago, we decided to work toward changing lives with science—to produce a mask that ensures you breathe truly clean air,” shares Boz Zou, UVMask creator. “While researching air pollution, we were alarmed as we understood the true health impact of air pollution. This was the driving force to design a technologically enhanced solution to tackle air pollution on a personal level.”
Thanks to its UV-C technology, the mask filters and sterilizes air in real time. The mask's two UV-C LEDs output a total of 50,000 µW, which is scientifically proven to break down the genetic material of airborne pathogens and sterilize the air we breathe.
Not only has the mask been independently tested and certified by an FDA-approved lab, the passive air filter—a CE-FFP2 (EU Standards N95 equivalent)—also has a 0.3-micron filtration efficiency of 99%. And the UV-C protection shows that it has an average efficacy rate of 99.93% against E. coli and Staphylococcus.
Available in black and white, it can be recharged via a USB-C port and works for up to six hours on a single charge. Its airtight, soft face pad and adjustable straps are made for comfort. And if you are sick of your glasses fogging up, the UVMask's sideways air-intakes will also prevent that situation.
Right now the UVMask is set to ship in October 2020 and is available at 60% off for $99. Each mask comes with a filter that offers 40 to 50 hours of protection and additional filters can be added to your order.
