The promise of virtual reality is to transport and immerse you in a different world.
But as my colleague Ben Gilbert wrote earlier this week, it's only immersive for your eyes and ears — your body is still very much stuck in the "real world."
Enter the Teslasuit, a sensor-packed bodysuit that allows you to feel what you're experiencing in virtual reality.
The project went live on Kickstarter on Monday and is hoping to raise about $370,000.
The Teslasuit has been in development for three years and it bills itself as "the world’s first full-body haptic suit that lets you feel what you play."
It's a full-bodied suit packed with sensors that create sensations all over your body.
It uses neuromuscular electrical stimulation sensors —like the ones used in physical therapy — that emit "mild electrical impulses."
Because it uses electrical stimulation technology, Teslasuit says that it shouldn't be used by people who have pacemakers, epilepsy, heart disease, or are pregnant.
The Pioneer comes with a "climate control" feature to simulate different environments.
The suit can simulate sensations like rain, heat, water, wind, and touch, as well as simulate gaming "experiences" like bullet shots and explosions...
The Teslasuit's battery, memory, and other internals, are housed in the T-Belt Control Unit.
It's not just for VR — it can work with mobile devices, PCs, and game consoles.
The final prices of the suit aren't yet clear, but a Pioneer developer kit will be sent to those who pledge $2,655 or more on Kickstarter.
A developer kit includes an application that can be used to create haptic feedback for the suit as well as other developer tools.
And a Prodigy Edition will be sent to those who pledge $3,098 or more.
So far, Teslasuit has 24 backers and has raised $17,575 of its $369,000 goal on Kickstarter.
