Mac DeMarco, Jessica Pratt, DIIV, Wild Nothing & more in new Cleaners from Venus doc (trailer)

July 30th - via: brooklynvegan.com
Martin Newell has been making wonderful pop music since the late '70s, mostly on his own with a four-track recorder and mostly under the banner of The Cleaners from Venus. There have been attempts to bring his music to a wider audience - XTC's Andy Partridge produced Newell's 1993 album The Greatest Living Englishman - but mostly he seems happy to exist at the fringes, and has gained quite a cult following along the way. Captured Tracks, who have reissued many of Newell's albums over the last 10 years, are producing a documentary directed by James Sharp titled The Jangling Man: The Martin Newell Story which features rare footage and extensive interviews Newell, as well as fans and collaborators like John Cooper Clarke, Dave Gregory, Mac Demarco, BBC DJ Steve Lamacq, Kimberley Rew, Jessica Pratt, R. Stevie Moore, Zachary Cole Smith, Iain McNay, Jack Tatum, and more. (Read More)

Martin Newell Documentary 'The Jangling Man' Gets Kickstarter, Trailer

July 30th - via: stereogum.com
Martin Newell may or may not be The Greatest Living Englishman, as advertised by his 1993 album produced by XTC's Andy Partridge. Both in his solo work and with his band the Cleaners From Venus, Newell helped to pioneer a jangly style of underground guitar-pop that has proven deeply influential within the indie rock realm. The movie, titled The Jangling Man seeks to spread Newell's gospel. The filmmakers have launched a Kickstarter campaign today to fund the movie's release and promotion, with perks such as a Newell mixtape by Captured Tracks founder Mike Sniper, Cleaners From Venus merch and vinyl, an expanded version of the movie, a photo zine, and more. Donate here and watch a trailer for The Jangling Man below. (Read More)
