Nintendo's F-Zero series has inspired all sorts of futuristic racing games over the years, and the latest one to arrive on the scene is Aero GPX.
This Kickstarter project by solo developer Aaron McDevitt has launched today on PC (via Steam Early Access) and is described as an anti-gravity racer channelling F-Zero X and F-Zero GX. A few other Nintendo inspirations include Wave Race 64 for the "uplifting, arcade-like summer vibe" and Kirby Air Ride, for its "simple-to-pick-up nature".
As noted in our previous coverage of this game, a Switch release is in consideration, but right now the main focus is on PC:
"Aero GPX belongs on the Switch just as much as it belongs on the PC. It also belongs on other consoles to give all players the opportunity to experience the distinct and relentless anti-gravity racing experience that Aero GPX provides.
"Depending on the possible success of the Kickstarter campaign past the initial funding goal, more options might be able to be explored. However, a PC release is all that can be committed to for now."
Apart from Early Access, you can also download a demo of Aero GPX on Steam. Would you be interested in seeing this on a Nintendo platform one day? Let us know in the comments.

Finally one of these that isn’t actually more like Wipeout!
Looks pretty cool
This is the first F-Zero clone I've seen that looks like the developers "get it."
@topher6490 Really? Cuz they "get it" too well, to the point of having a lot of F-Zero X's stingy handling.
Give me GX any day over this...
Granted, the game is still in development so it might get ironed out, but man, I was not having fun during the demo...
@NeonPizza In some fairness, you're comparing AA games to indies
That said, you might want to give XF Extreme Formula a shot. That got me stimulated while playing it's demo.
Discovered this a few hours ago
from Chris Adler, former drummer of Lamb of God. He mentioned on socials that he drummed for the song “Spingrind” w. the artist, Myrone. Whom I believe produced the official OST.

Looks quite good for an F-Zero clone. Im intrigued… they seem to get it right
Huh, never thought I'd see a F-Zero clone that actually handles like F-Zero and isn't just Wipeout in disguise.
I'll keep an eye on this one.
@topher6490 My same thoughts when watching the video.
@NeonPizza Yeah, imagine a indie dev not having the resources of a millionaire dollar company behind it.
Played the demo for 5 mins on Steam Deck and was impressed. It does nail the feel and the art style gives it more personality than the average indie racer. I'm a bit skeptical of a Switch port being able to reach stable 60fps, seeing that it's an Unreal Engine game.
Looks ok, but also looks too fast for the Switch to handle, if Nintendo couldn't work out how to get F Zero GX to run on Switch due to the speed of rendering required, these guys would have no hope.
The art direction doesn't appeal to me at all, but the music 😍 I definitely want to hear more. Hope they'll make a demo on Switch, I'd really like to try that.
Otherwise a WipeOut port or Quantum Redshift remake ... that would be something!
@liveswired That's not the issue. The issue is emulation.
Of course the game can run fast on Switch. The system is perhaps 5x as powerful than a gamecube.
Definitely has the F-Zero X style handling, cracking tune too. Hope it comes to Switch or Switch 2.
‘Inspired’ by FZero. It’s a full blown carbon copy. Looks awesome though!
Looks like it is forgiving when you hit a corner which is great. With some older games you just blow up straight away.
I like the look of this very much.
Definitely looks cool, I would put it on my wish list if it ever comes to switch.
This looks like a hell of a rush!
I can’t wait to give it a try.
It is not "inspired" by F-Zero: it is actually a clone.
Wow, this looks frenetic as hell, I like it!
While we don't get any new F-Zero from Ninty, I'm sooo getting this if it comes to Switch.
Yep, I supported this on Kickstarter and got my Steam key for it yesterday, looking forward to giving it a try when I can even as is but I really hope it will eventually come to Switch (and/or its successor), too!
I downloaded the demo already. One of my most anticipated game releases currently. The world needs more games like F-Zero X and especially GX.
@Samalik Actually, the Switch is about 33 times more powerfull on brute power.
Gamecube provide about 9 Glops, while the Switch is something like 0.3 Teraflops
@NeonPizza I agree 100%. I watched that trailer and thought of the word "bland". If anything, this is a vanilla knock-off of F-Zero
@F_Destroyer Glad we got a tech enthusiast here
This will be right at home on Switch. Just got it on Steam yesterday and it feels like a natural step forward for the F-Zero formula.
@F_Destroyer First time I've heard the words brute power associated with Switch lol. You can't say 33x more powerful because it isn't, Terraflops are one part of the puzzle. A Switch at its best is approximately 16x more powerful than a GameCube with max safe overclocks applied.
Switch 2 will be close to Steam Deck territory which should make emulating GameCube/Wii games easier.
@NeonPizza
"What's stopping somebody like WayForward, from using F-Zero 99 as a template, and making a 16-bit spiritual sequel that takes the series to new heights?"
F-Zero 99 isn't all that impressive to play. While I had my fun, I honestly don't get what you see in it to being so adamant about it, tbh. It just feels like F-zero but too old, compared to most modern future racers which are more inspired by GX and doing a damn good job carrying that legacy with their own spin.
