Controversial musical comic Künt has successfully funded a film version of his stage show Shannon Matthews: The Musical via Kickstarter.

Launched on Friday, the project is an adaptation of a musical Künt wrote in 2010, but did not get around to performing on stage until this year. The Edinburgh Fringe production was created by Yorkshire-based theatre company Tuppence Ha'penny.

The musical is based on the real-life story of Karen Matthews, who faked the disappearance of her own daughter Shannon in 2008 in an attempt to cash in on the reward money.

The first live performances attracted criticism from local politicians and some early warm-up performances in Yorkshire were cancelled by venues, but the show attracted positive reviews when performed in Edinburgh.

The Kickstarter campaign to raise the £10,000 required to make the film version reached its goal in less than 24 hours. Rewards offered include digital copies of the film, CDs of the soundtrack, appearing as an extra in a scene, and being credited as an executive producer. The campaign itself ends at 23:59 on 21st October.

Künt posted on Twitter: "Christ on a bike. Shannon Matthews: The Musical - The Movie is happening! It reached its funding goal in less than 24 hours thanks all you early bird backers! Keep supporting it and we'll get our thinking caps on for some stretch goal rewards for you all".

Künt is due to live stream on Twitch today (Saturday 1st October) at 21.07.
