Dead Drop Studios Launches Kickstarter For ‘Outbreak: Shades of Horror’

Published

Developer Dead Drop Studios is continuing with their Outbreak series of Survival Horror titles with Outbreak: Shades of Horror. This time around, they’re using Kickstarter to help get the game off the ground. Dead Drop Studios has also partnered with Limited Run Games to offer physical versions of the game, along with merchandise.

The story for Shades of Horror centres on a cast of survivors as they fight to escape the city of Cypress Ridge during the early days of the zombie apocalypse. Characters from previous Outbreak games will be returning in Shades of Horror, along with the reveal of their origins. Each survivor will have their own backstory, explaining how they ended up in Cypress Ridge, as well as their own unique skills that will allow them to make their way through the city. Shades of Horror will encourage players to play as each of the survivors “in order to construct what has happened from bits and pieces of journal entries, recordings and radio station broadcasts scattered throughout the city.”

Outbreak: Shades of Horror is touted as a “love letter” to the Survival Horror games in the late 1990s and early 2000s. “Towards the end of this era, there was an emphasis on stories driven by multiple characters that utilized multiplayer co-op,” read the description on the Kickstarter page. “This model of storytelling was abandoned with the rise of action horror. This left a loyal fanbase (these developers included) desperate for someone to revisit the survival horror genre and expand on the untapped potential left in this style of play. With Outbreak: Shades of Horror, Dead Drop Studios harness this potential to craft an essential new entry in the survival horror genre.”

Seeing as this is a Kickstarter campaign, there will be stretch goals for Shades of Horror. Those haven’t been revealed as of yet, as the team wants to focus on fully funding the game first. However, from the teaser images, it would appear that crossplay is a possibility, along with what looks to be dinosaurs (?!).

Currently, you can try out a playable teaser for the game via Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and Stadia.

Eneida Games and Cat-astrophe Games are following up 2020’s horror adventure title Don’t Be Afraid with the sequel, Don’t Be Afraid 2. The developers have released a new gameplay trailer, delving into the details of the sequel.

Don’t Be Afraid 2 sees you once again in the shoes of David, who is 15 years removed from the events of the first game. For years, David tried to pick up the pieces and deal with the damage the events left on him. Unable to keep a job, find a partner, or even handle simple daily tasks, he leads a pitiful life under the watchful eye of his therapist. Unfortunately, David’s past has caught up to him sooner than he expected, resulting in him now reliving the darkest moments of his life. David must now gather clues about his past and solve puzzles left behind by the deranged murderer toying with his life, trying to find a way out of a mansion where the line between dreams and reality is blurred.

As such, Don’t Be Afraid 2 features two unique endings. Will you escape or succumb to your fears? Can you deal with David’s past or will it break you? You’ll have to struggle your way through the horrors that endure in David’s psyche, navigating a series of sinister escape rooms, and uncover the chilling truth behind the nightmares.

“The original Don’t Be Afraid was much loved by a community, brave horror game fans that accepted the frightening challenge ahead of them,” says Krzysztof Szymański, Narrative Director. “Now, we propose an even scarier, and gut-wrenching experience not for the faint of heart. Will you have what it takes to survive? We can’t wait to see you try!”

Don’t Be Afraid 2 is currently in development for PC via Steam, Playstation 5, Xbox Series and the Nintendo Switch.
