Magnetic Press has officially launched a Kickstarter campaign for Wahcommo, an upcoming original graphic novel by comic book artist Luis NCT -- who is perhaps best known for his work as a colorist opposite artist Jason Alexander on such titles as Frostbite, Empty Zone and Killadelphia.
Described as "[Lord of the Rings] with a Nordic skew," NCT's Wahcommo is a dark fantasy tale "filled with monsters, trials, mythical cities and faced-paced adventure mixed with a coming-of-age identity drama. The OGN is set to feature a Kickstarter-exclusive variant hardcover by artist Karl Kerschl (Isola). At the time of writing, the Kickstarter campaign has already amassed over $18,850 USD in pledges, nearly tripling the initial goal of $6,500. What's more, the campaign will remain active until Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. EST.
"We're always looking to bring the hottest titles and talent 'discoveries' to the English-language stage, and we were immediately hooked by Luis NCT's work the minute we first saw Wahcommo in Angouleme, said Magnetic Press publisher Mike Kennedy. "It is a perfect fit with Magnetic’s slate of visually dynamic, conceptual aesthetic, absolutely deserving of a premium hardcover presentation. And being able to work with Karl Kerschl, co-creators of one of our favorite North American comics Isola, on the campaign-exclusive variant makes this project even sweeter."
Per an official synopsis for Wahcommo,
Every generation, the bravest warrior in the tribe is tasked with venturing north to the Lost City of their ancestors to retrieve a portion of the treasure their forefathers had abandoned fleeing the cataclysm that nearly wiped them out. The trials are hard and many, but so is the quest this individual will inherit.
This time, however, to the surprise of many, the chosen warrior is a young woman.
Kaya secretly entered herself into the trials, unwilling to accept the age-old assumption placed on women to become mothers and homebuilders. While forced to be accompanied by the male runner-up, an eager boy named Fox, she vows to prove the old traditions have expired by coming back loaded with riches.
The two set off on a fantastic journey filled with orcs, goblins, giants, and ghosts, encountering both physical and moral dilemma in an adventure that could rewrite their people's history.
