Tomorrow Dies Today – Becoming a Super Villain

The world is on the brink of an unbelievable shift in power. Everything because of a single individual and his mind filled with ambition, genius and… rotten to its very core.

General Goodman has finally finished his evil plans and is about to set them in motion. Would you dare try to stop or defeat him? Well then you might have picked a wrong game as in Tomorrow Dies Today everybody plays as villains!

General Goodman and His Talented Friends

While Goodman is the mastermind and the central figure of the entire story, his fellow henchmen are equally important in making his vision of the world real. No matter which way of playing the game will you choose, you’ll always have to pick one of the available characters. They differ by their (surprisingly interesting) backstories, available abilities and other unique qualities.

Want to choose pure muscle and work as Goodman’s main bodyguard? Boris is your guy. Prefer a dash of madness in the form of Archibald Kluge – a scientist obsessed with robotics and not necessarily sane? How about Cassandra, a political fixer whose diplomatic skills can fool and trick virtually anyone. The rest of the colorful cast includes: a genius thief, a bioweapon expert, a gentleman assassin, a pilot specialized in smuggling goods, a mechanical engineer and a mysterious hacker nicknamed “The Node”.

Pick Your Own Scheme

Tomorrow Dies Today is a highly customizable game. Before you even start setting the board up, you have to choose a mode to play. Each of the 3 variants puts you in a different situation and allows for different player counts: from solo up to even 7 at the same time.

The amount of cooperation differs in each mode so you either work together, make short truces or simply fight each other like there’s no tomorrow. No matter which one you pick, games usually take from 2 to 4 hours to complete.

Loyalty or Betrayal

The Cutthroat Mode is probably the most original as long as you enjoy games where cooperation is only partial. One of the players takes on the role of General Goodman and will try to do everything to complete his scheme before the time runs out. He can’t do it by himself though and that’s where all other players come in.

Everyone will try to aid Goodman in his actions and gain VPs (Villain Prestinge). The player with the highest number of these wins the game along the Goodman player. It is however possible to betray your leader, crush his plans and become the sole winner through betrayal. To spice the gameplay up, there are 5 different scenarios, so each game should feel unique.

General Goodman is the only playable character without his own piece on the map and always has to rely on the help of others. He can reward players as well, which pretty much makes him a “game master” of sorts, able to make things easier for newcomers.

More Ways to Conquer the World

The Syndicate Mode is a different take on the formula and this time: is fully cooperative as well as playable solo. Like in the previous mode, all characters have plenty of unique traits but you have to use them well to match the moves of other fellow players and bring the dreaded Doomsday before the time runs out. To do this you will have to overcome complicated Global Challenges and fight against world organizations together.

Mayhem Mode is the least peaceful of the three. Here players form 2 or 3 teams competing for victory. The winning team will be allowed to join the ranks of Goodman’s own, new world order. Expect lots of aggressive gameplay, competing for every resource and lots of temporary alliances that might end in the least expected moment.

Time for Action

All 3 variants of the game share a similar turn structure. The Scheming Phase marks the beginning and has players plan 3 moves in advance. You can also build new gadgets, use your Plotting Actions and create squads from your own forces.

The Villainy Phase is where the real action happens. Here your squads complete missions to receive all sorts of rewards. It’s also possible to trade with other players or interact with agents present in the field. Certain modes allow PvP combat here as well. It’s worth noting that the game hardly uses any sort of randomness so the fights in Tomorrow Dies Today are highly strategic and don’t rely on luck.

The final part of each turn is called Monologuing. The name comes from the idea of all characters bragging about their achievements to improve their position. This leads to Goodman revealing side jobs, directives and new gadgets.

Tomorrow Dies Today – The Kickstarter Campaign

Tomorrow Dies Today approaches its villain theme in a wonderful way. The game puts a huge focus on negotiation skills and rewards players who use them well. As there’s barely any randomness, the gameplay relies on skill and smart planning. We also love the idea of three gameplay modes. Many board games would attract more backers if they had an option to play with no negative interactions or by having a hardore PvP mode for fans of more brutal competition.

The Kickstarter campaign got funded recently and still has 20 days left to go. You can get the entire game with stretch goal bonuses and metal miniatures for $65.
