A game that wants to evolve the monster battle genre

Two weeks ago, we told you about Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, a cRPG developed by Owlcat Games, the same studio behind one of the best cRPGs based on D&D ruleset – Pathfinder: Kingmaker.

Since there are so many interesting Kickstarter projects that might not get the coverage they deserve, we've decided to highlight those that we believe are worth your time. We'll write about Kickstarter games every week and the first project we'll talk about is Kindred Fates.

Developed by Skymill Studios, Kindred Fates is an open-world monster battling RPG. From the little gameplay that we've seen on the Kickstarter page, it seems like Monster Hunter and Pokemon had a baby.

The project well exceeded its funding mark, so it will happen for sure. The guys from Skymill Studios are asking for $50,000 to make Kindred Fates, but they got nearly $300,000 in return, which means several stretch goals have been funded as well, including a Nintendo Switch release

The next major stretch goal would be a co-op mode at $350,000, so if you like the game, you might want to pledge as quickly as possible since the Kickstarter campaign will only remain live for another four days.

In Kindred Fates, you fight so-called kinfolks, but you can also explore the world using various means of transportation, including riding, flying and swimming. Although it's a monster battling game, the developers promise to create a game with “thought-provoking storytelling, antagonists with a sympathetic cause, compelling character development, morally ambiguous decisions, and living with the consequences of your actions.”

Your character's appearance can be customized, but not your skills since it's your kinfolk that will do the battle. Just like in Pokemon, you will be able to recruit new kinfolk to battle other monsters. They will evolve and they're even capable of creating bonds with your character, which will make them fight harder or learn new moves, and even allow you to ride them.

There are all sorts of kinfolk types, including Light, Earth, Gaia, Water, Fire, Air, Mecha and a lot more. You'll need to use the correct kinfolk to fight certain monsters if you want to win fights easier.

Kindred Fates shapes up to be an interesting game for those who are into monster hunting and Pokemon catching, so we'd strongly recommend checking this one out. Kindred Fates is expected to be released on PC and Nintendo Switch in June 2023.
