In the same interview with Nintendo Everything, prior to the reveal of The Wonderful 101: Remastered, PlatinumGames head Atsushi Inaba said the developer was open to a follow-up, provided fans showed their support for the remaster.
In regards to a sequel or something, we can’t make one if there aren’t any fans for the series in the first place. So if fans support this and things go really well for The Wonderful 101, then I’d say it’s pretty natural that we’d want to make another game in the series!
The game's director Hideki Kamiya added to this, stating how he had all these creative ideas flowing back when the original Wii U title was in development and hoped he could put them to use in the future:
I had ideas like, ‘Oh, what would it be like if we did a sequel where Wonder Blue was the leader?’ All of these creative and exciting ideas were flowing, and then the game released and I saw the numbers and was like, ‘Wait, what?!’ So, I hope I get to have those aspirations again in the future.
Last weekend, The Wonderful 101: Remastered surpassed its $1.5 million Kickstarter stretch goal, which unlocked "Luka's First Mission" and two more stretch goals.
Would you like to see a sequel one day? Have you shown your support by backing the first game on Kickstarter? Leave a comment below.

A sequel has been my biggest hope for quite a while now, so I'm glad that the (possible) series is getting a chance to prove itself.
Also, before anyone comes in here talking about Platinum trying to "force people into buying the game" with this comment, remember that this is how every series works. If the first game doesn't sell well, then there's no reason they'd make a sequel.
More Wonder power to them! I'd really like a Wonder Blue or Wonder Pink spin-off in the vain of Viewtiful Joe
@Klunk23 I would hope that people understand why Platinum's gotta do something like that and is unusual for them, though I do empathize if Capcom and other companies jaded people on that front.
I mean, no duh? Generally, sequels correlate to game success.
@KingBowser86 I would also hope so too, but I remember an Astral Chain article (focusing on a similar topic) comments section having a handful of people accusing Platinum of "holding the sequel ranson". But I definitely agree that Nintendo fans' general aversion to comments like this is pretty well earned thanks to companies like Capcom and EA.
I found it disheartening that they'd asked money from people to port their own (already existing) game to the hottest console in the world.
And now this.
PlatinumGames is getting lower and lower in my eyes.
So how much did the original sell worldwide?
When it was released on WiiU the game had a very small chance of becoming a best seller. I got it because I was still in the Bayonetta hype. And W101 is a very similar to Bayonetta in gameplay style, but different enough to deserve to be play, especially by those who like other platinum games. I think the most cumbersome part was controlling and drawing with the gamepad, especially the parts that used both screens were more confusing than fun. I hope the found a good solution to port it to one screen.
I was disappointed too, in the beginning, that they used Kickstarter, but now I'm glad they did. I got my physical copy pre-ordered for a very good price and can't wait to play it on the go (i would have done the same if it was being released in the typical way!). Over that, it's the first Kickstarter where I'm sure about the game's quality. So now I look more at the result than at the premise.
I really hope people who didn't play W101 yet don't treat this game or the Kickstarter campaign with prejudice. It totally deserves a second chance AND a sequel.
So fully funding a port (within hours!) that they were already pretty much done with on Kickstarter isn't enough support for a sequel?
But, if y'all wanna port over Nier Automata to the switch, I wouldn't mind throwing money bags at it cause that is my dream! Love that game and I want more people to enjoy that game.
Hey Platinum, while we're talking about sequels, how about we see some of that Bayonetta 3?
Sorry but if it didn't get a sequel in the first place why should it get one now? Does that remind anyone of something else that missed the boat for a sequel? Avatar ring any bells?
If you make a sequel, I'll buy it.
Not the other way around.
It's that simple.
@adam9431 Somewhere around 350k according to vgchartz.
I would rather see a sequel to Astral Chain than Wonderful 101
NIER: AUTOMATA OR GTFO
@Steel76 I imagine Platinum will be composed of several in-house teams, each working on separate projects.
I would rather see a sequel to Wonderful 101 than Astral Chain
@mesome713 ‘Go get a job bums.’
Waw. Spectacularly dumb.
@HappyMaskedGuy This companies pure greed is what's wrong with the industry. They've been in the business for decades and still can't properly gage interest nor budget their games. They suck so bad, Sony, Microsoft, nor Nintendo found them worth buying...so some big coperate Chinese mobile gaming company bought them.
@mesome713 I’m going to cease communicating with you now. All the best.
@HappyMaskedGuy That would be wise.
No thanks, devs seriously need to stop with such level of desperation. Considering what the pricing of this remaster will be. They have no right telling us to buy it for them to make a sequel.
They've already made over a million i the kickstarter and it's still growing... how much more do they want to show our support?
Platinum seem to be growing increasingly arrogant. There has always been a degree of that to everything they do but they always seemed like cool guys with a bit of confidence rather than the arrogant d@#$% we are seeing in 2020. Fortunately Nintendo dont need Platinum as there is no shortage of talented developers working on the Switch these days.
All a bit shady. They started a Kickstarter, then games are ready for release in April. Sounds like the games were already completed. I'm sure Kickstarter wasn't invented for this type of crowd funding.
@Judgedean I think they used kickstarter more for marketing than funding. It basically generated a bunch of pre-sales on a game they were already releasing AND got a lot favorable press coverage as their "super successful kickstarter" made news. It was basically no-cost advertising for the game's release.
Hmmm, how much support is enough support if support can't support the support?!
I find this misleading. The headline makes it sound like they're demanding people support the kickstarter or else no sequel. But the quote sounds like he's just talking of the natural happening of a sequel when a game does well.
And the interview was before the reveal and so also before the kickstarter began is it not? If so, of course he would talk this way that if it did well, then they'd make a sequel. He didn't know how well it would do when this was said.
People are reacting to the misleading headline rather than the context of the actual quote.
@Muddy_4_Ever 100% agreed - which means they are using Kickstarter for the wrong purposes.
Let's twist our heroes Platinum for saying the same thing our most hated company EA say into something good.....
Could we get a Viewtiful Joe HD collection for Switch as well? Pretty please?
Interesting how W101 went from a low seller even for the Wii U to being a moderaly antecipated game with potential to a sequel
Looking foward to finally properly play a post-Capcom Kamiya game, Okami and DMC3 are one of my favorites games ever
Never played this game and I have no interest. All of this hype and all these articles make it seem like the bestest game ever released, I doubt it, and as someone has already pointed out the game was released years ago so just put it on a switch cartridge and sell it! X x x x x x bit upset because Caroline flack has just died, why does it have to be this way x x x take care everyone x
The game will sell more than on Wii U, but I will be VERY, VERY surprised if it manages to even come close to 1 million units sold total.
The Wonderful 102 incoming!
Better hear all you babies crying like when capcom says this
They only needed 50k USD to port to switch right? So couldn't they use the rest of the funds to make a sequel?
@Rexenokid
Yes i realize those sequels have been supposedly coming for years but as long as it is taking does anybody care anymore? Don't tell me James cameron is too busy with other projects. He couldn't even be bothered to direct the latest terminator and we see how that turned out.
All I'm saying is if wonderful 101 was deserving of a sequel it should have been made within a couple years after the original. Not nearly a decade later when most people forgot it existed like Avatar.
I see they have Switch but was that only Digital or Physical can't tell if they will make Switch Physical?
@maschinenmensch I had just learned the tragic passing of a beautiful woman and it is all such a waste. Was feeling emotional x take care x
This was the last Kamiya directed game, right?
@construx it takes a 💩 ton of time, money and effort to make a game so they just want to make sure that people are still interested before they go into development. How would you feel if you made a sequel to a game and it flops. I’m sure they’re not asking for crazy sales but just enough to see that people are still interested in the series and those sales plays a part with the development of the game cus making games isn’t free you gotta pay for resources and you have to pay your team
I tend to say what I feel with emotion, they run me I guess. Anyway I off to play Yoshi island x
Lets not forget: Nintendo still own the IP. Any sequel they make will have to be with Nintendo's support and Nintendo will almost certainly want it to be exclusive to their platform. That might not sit well with any people who buy the multiplat remaster of the first game on other consoles.
