Over the years, Kickstarter has become an increasingly acceptable way for new and proven developers to fund games. Koji Igarashi's Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is one of the latest titles to be backed by an entire community.
During an interview with DenFamiNicoGamer! earlier this month, that was recently translated by Siliconera, Iga was asked about how he made use of fan feedback during the development of his latest game. While he was open to many different suggestions, he said adding all of the ideas would have resulted in no sense of uniqueness. According to Iga, the final decision must always be made by the developer, rather than the fans:
"There are many opinions from people, but if you heed them all, the game won’t have any uniqueness. We’re a bunch that likes to stand out from the crowd, so I believe that the final decision must always be made by us.
"With that in mind, Kickstarter is a great way to show off the unique features while collecting all sorts of opinions."
As for how the experience compared to "normal" game development, here's what the Japanese producer had to say:
“Also, I believe that being able to see whether the fans will be satisfied with the game is both good and bad. In normal game development, game info will release around 1 year beforehand. However, by that time, we are unable to change how the game works. With this sort of development method used this time, I was able to communicate with the fans during a period where such changes were still possible.”

Too bad the feedback from the Switch Port isn't helping much.
Nobody asked him why he thought the switch version was ok, huh?
I don't wanna be the one, but I'll be the one. Why brag about "hearing your fans" when the major complaints on the Switch, post-launch, haven't been addressed yet? The game doesn't run well.
Switch version sucks and I'm mad.
50% through and have shelved it until the patches start dropping. They should have waited until September to drop the game.
@aznable Yeah, you might think maybe Nintendo Life could reach out to him, but no.
@Kalmaro It is helping. Maybe not as quick as you want it to be, but that doesn’t mean things aren’t being done. Give it time, or try the game on a different console. Having people complain every single day (or what seems like every single day) on here, repeating the same thing over and over, gets tedious.
It wasn't made by Iga and "Inti Creates" though.
@Nerdfather1 I'll belive it when I see it. I'm only interested in the Switch version.
Guys this isn't a gigantic studio, they are working on fixing the switch version but it takes time to do work.
My fan feedback is "please, please, please get Bloodstained Ritual of the Night running at 60fps on Switch" I can't believe I haven't played this game yet. I'm really excited about it, but badly want to play it on Switch. If they never get it running at 60fps I'll just turn to my PC and reluctantly play it that way...
Playing it on my PS4, I'm glad it wasn't a disappointment like trash number 9 and looks ten times better than that train wreck as for the Switch owners remember it's better than nothing or just buy the PS4/PC version
Um, no I didn't play Bloodstained on Switch yet, nor did I support the Kickstarter campaign. I am a big Castlevania fan though, ever since I played Castlevania 2 with a friend years ago. What sealed the deal for me was Symphony of the Night, and all the GBA and DS games. Man, I wish there was a sprite based 3D stereoscopic Castlevania on 3DS! Running at 60fps and looking roughly like Shovel Knight or Steamworld Dig, it would be a dream! Maybe we'll get something like that on Switch someday. I'd buy it! Also, maybe it could have multiplayer like Guacamelee 1 and 2. Co-op whipping would be so fun!
For those that suggest to play Bloodstained on another console. Unfortunately I don't have that luxury. Also what is wrong with expecting a non-flawed version, especially after they said that the PAX version they showed had had issues due to heating issues.
The problem seems to have been clear for them and they chose to deceive about it. They shipped out other versions and held the Switch version back to angle for more amicable reviews.
So yeah, I am expecting them to fix this and rather in a timely manner.
Aside the technical issues the game itself is great.
One of the better games to be honest.
People are.expexting too much this is a small studio they need more time to test and fix this kind of stuff
@Quarth We can't even reach out to him as backers for the game.
I will NEVER EVER take part in crowdfunding again – been burned twice and looking at the switch version, this would have been another burn.
Taking your funding from people while leaving them with all the risk of losing their money, never getting a product or an inferior product is just not an acceptable way of doing business for me…
Does the game still have performance issues on Switch?
Think this game falls short in many departments.
Where's the update patch?
As an owner of the Switch version, I am stuck waiting for patches. A game should be released in a fit state on all platforms it releases on or the version should be delayed. I will be happy if patched but I think arguments of them being a small team don't detract from overall quality.
After lying to us about the PAX demo and releasing a lackluster port, how can we trust anything this guy says?
Gonna GameFly it and hopefully the patch drops by then.
Just beat the game on Switch. Loved it.
Some day i'll get to play the game in a less buggy state on the switch. Every day i can't play it in this state is a day i kick myself for changing from PS4 to switch version.
@NintendoFan4Lyf Finally! Someone who is completely rational regarding this game on the Switch at its current state.
@Dunan That's sad. But game journos should have better contacts.
@Nerdfather1 I'm not seeing what you're so excited about. I don't doubt the game is still enjoyable, but it still has problems that they should have caught ages ago and didn't, despite the Switch version even being delayed.
