It's impossible to not think about crowdfunding at E3 this year, between Sony's very public grandstanding for the Shenmue III Kickstarter, and the abundance of small games that had succeeded on the platform present at the show.
Many developers and designers have taken advantage of crowdfunding as a way to get their pet projects off the ground -- or to breathe new life into a dormant franchise. But it’s not just the passion of the creators that has turned Kickstarter into such a sensation within the game world. The business model is equally reliant on getting backers to invest more than their dollars, offering incentive for dedicated fans to sink their time and energy into these projects.
Here are five of the many independent games that we saw at E3 that used Kickstarter funding. These games in particular demonstrate the broad impact that crowdfunding has had on how today’s creators market, build, hone and distribute their work.
