Some great things are happening in the Cosplay community! A group of ladies, in the DC Metro Area, are changing the way you look at Cosplay!
Studio Cosplay is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in the DC metro area whose mission is to promote community through the art of costuming by providing workspace, opportunity, and education. Their Kickstarter goes live in February 2015!
Studio Cosplay is opening a community-operated workshop in 2015 where Cosplayers can connect and exchange ideas, share resources and knowledge, collaborate on projects, take instructional classes and hands-on workshops, and have the space and tools to work on costumes. The workshop will be based in the DC metro area and will welcome all Cosplayers, costume designers, LARPers, photographers, artists, and anyone interested in learning about costuming.

“There are so many creative people in the cosplay community but many don’t have the means or skill to transform into their favorite characters the way they envision, “ said Stefanie Hackenberg, a founding member of the organization. “The art of cosplay should only be limited by imagination; not by logistics or lack of knowledge.”
The studio will offer hands-on classes for Cosplayers across all skill levels, ranging from sewing to photo shoots to working with thermoplastics. There will be multiple stations catering to making and displaying costumes, armor, and props, the types of equipment provided will include sewing, painting, fabricating, wig styling, 3D printing and more. Photographers will also have the use of a green screen.
Not only is Studio Cosplay opening a space for the Cosplay community but the group also plans to provide emergency repair support at fandom conventions nationwide where members can glue up, stitch up, finish up, and rest up before diving back into the crowd.
Studio Cosplay’s mission is to promote community through the art of costuming by providing workspace, opportunity, and education. The organization’s founders, Liz Gmaz, Stefanie Hackenberg, Sabrina Maizland and Daria Medved, are cosplayers who see a need in the community for a place Cosplayers can work on projects, meet other Cosplayers, learn how to make costumes and props, and expand their artistic expression.
