Shadowrun: Hong Kong’s Kickstarter campaign has officially ended, and the cyberpunk fantasy game has earned over $1.2 million of its original $100,000 goal with over 30,000 backers.
Shadowrun began as a tabletop roleplaying game set in a sci-fi world that is like a bizarre mash up of Blade Runner and Dungeons & Dragons. The game world is populated by cyborgs, elves, and cyborg elves, as well as an assortment of other fantasy and sci-fi characters.
The Shadowrun series has been adapted into several video games going all the way back to a 1994 SNES title, and the most recent games to be released were Shadowrun: Returns and its followup, 2014’s Shadowrun: Dragonfall, which were both isometric turn-based CRPGs.
Shadowrun: Hong Kong will be produced by the same team that made Returns and Dragonfall, and it will take place in a fictional version of Hong Kong that the developer describes as “a stable and prosperous port of call in a sea of chaos, warfare, and political turmoil.”
The gameplay will be similar to the previous two games, with turn-based actions and lots of different playstyles. The developer promises the game will have “everything you expect from a Harebrained Schemes Shadowrun game: strong storytelling and sharp writing, lots of morally gray choices, a crew of memorable characters with distinct personalities, challenging tactical turn-based combat, a robust character creation system, and a one of a kind cyberpunk-meets-magic game setting that’s endured for over 25 years. ”
The enormous success of the game’s Kickstarter campaign tore through all of the developer’s stretch goals in quick succession, including new playable characters, improved animatics, expanded magic and combat systems, and an extra 4 to 5 hour mini-campaign that is free to backers who spent $15 or more.
If you did not manage to contribute to the Shadowrun: Hong Kong Kickstarter campaign before it ended, you can still preorder a copy through the Backerkit “second chance campaign,” which runs through March 13. The Backerit preorders come in several different price brackets ranging from $15 up through $150. Each level comes with different benefits, including soundtracks, game wallpapers, e-books, and more.
