Kickstarter InnerSpace Twists Flight Sims Into A Physics Bending Open World

October 21, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

The game seeks to bridge the dissonance between needing to meet story missions and the desire for free exploration.

This new Kickstarter brings an ambitious twist to flight sims that may pique  your interest, even if you have no interest in the genre. Introducing PolyKnight Games’ InnerSpace.

The game’s premise hinges on the popularity of exploration in open-world games.  Usually, players find themselves eschewing scripted story missions to enjoy the experience of freely exploring the world. With InnerSpace, PolyKnight seeks to bring the two elements together again.

In this game, free exploration is the missions. Levels aren’t artificially divided, but instead weaved into a larger environment you can enter and leave as you wish. Obstacles are indicative of game progression goals, and when you progress, you gain access to wholly unique areas and new abilities. The developers draw inspiration from games like Proteus, Journey and Minecraft, and promise to bring elements from all those games for this one.

The game world eschews traditional laws of physics, as your ‘plane’ can freely enter and exit airspace as well as the open waters. Your craft does some flying, diving, and even powersliding. Guns and wing blades encourage interaction with the environment, a large part of which is destructible.

Most intriguing of all, area bosses encounters do not function in the traditional sense. You will not necessarily defeat these behemoths, but your interactions with them will serve as the springboard for cinematic sequences. At the bottom of it all is a story of archaeological exploration and relic hunting.

InnerSpace also happens to be a participant in the University of Texas at Dallas’ ATEC Crowdfunding Month. Because of the provisions of that program, their crowdfund is extended beyond the usual 30 days to 45 days.

InnerSpace is looking for $ 25,000, and has ample time to meet its goal, although the obtuse game concept may be a hard sell. You can watch the pitch video above and help fund the game here, but if you need more convincing, you can check out a developer interview below. You can also listen to some tracks from the game’s soundtrack.
